I hope you all are enjoying the gardens and reaping a great harvest this season!
There is plenty going on in and round the community gardens in the final stretch of this year’s growing season.
Healthy Family Nights starting September 30th
Sponsored by Genesis Housing Corporation and in collaboration with ArtFusion and Olivet’s Boys and Girls Club, Mosaic will offer interactive nutrition 8-week workshop free for the entire family. Adults and children will learn how to make better food choices and how to prepare better meals the entire family will enjoy. Our Healthy Family Nights also offers each family to create their own food journal to keep recipes and other food or fitness related artwork! After each session, everyone is invited to work out in the gym at the Olivet’s with a personal trainer! Don’t miss out on this great learning opportunity! Please see attached flyer to register and learn more about the program.
The corn grown at the gardens at 615 Chestnut Streets is ready for pickin! Don’t the slightly brown husks on the top of the ears fool you, we had to let the ears grow to about 6” or more which took some time. But now it’s ready! We were told by our lovely garden member, Margo, that it is delicious! (see her smiling face in the photo attached). Thanks Margo for critiquing our corn-growing skills!
Every active garden member who has a plot this season is welcome to take 2-3 ears of corn to enjoy at their leisure. Please respect the sense of community and only take what is yours – helping yourself to more than 2-3 ears will keep another family from enjoying the same experience. The code for the lock at our 615 gardens is the same as the gardens at 423. Help yourself (to what is yours)!
Please get your share of corn no later than Friday, September 9/12 at 8:00 AM. The rest of the corn will be harvested and sold on the produce cart Saturday morning.
Speaking of Produce Cart
The cart is flourishing this year and there is still time for you and your family and friends to buy fresh vegetables and herbs! They go on sale every Saturday beginning at 9:00 AM. The cart won’t be around for long as this year’s season is quickly coming to a close. Please visit the gardens at 423 Chestnut Street to make your purchases on Saturday…it could be your last opportunity. Attached are a few photos of what went on today at the garden…check it out!
A Season to Be Thankful (Random Acts of Gratitude)
MOSAIC wishes to take a brief moment to thank the organizations, garden members, their family and friends and our other countless volunteers who have helped in the success of the gardens this season! We hope our partnerships, collaborations and community development efforts will continue for years to come. A big huge thanks to EVERYONE!
Gratitude can transform common days into Thanksgiving, turn routine jobs into joy, and change ordinary opportunities in blessings. – William Arthur Ward

Good morning gardeners,
I hope each of you are having a fabulously-relaxing summer while managing to stay cool and hydrated at this point.
Pick Your Own Plot! – AN URGENT MESSAGE!
There have been cases at both garden where gardeners vegetables are being picked by someone else. Two gardeners have complained that their produce has been taken by someone else. THIS IS NOT GOOD. Many of our gardeners come to the garden regularly and pick their produce on a day and time suitable to them.
Let’s not be the judge of whether or not they show up. I have heard from other gardeners, “People aren’t picking their produce.” Well, our response to that comment, “Give them a chance.” Gardeners have had cucumbers, zucchini and watermelons taken right from under their families noses. This is not fair.
Please understand, there are only 4 “community plots” located at the 615 Chestnut Street garden. And even these plots should not be over-picked as some of the produce will be sold to local restaurants and on our produce cart. The money will be used to benefit additional community garden initiatives.
Some people are sharing produce with the non-gardeners in our community and we encourage and value what you do. However, do not allow it to be at the expense of gardeners who tilled, weeded, planted and PAID for their plots!
Water, Water and More Water
Don’t forget to water your garden plot! Now is the time of year where garden plots need to be water each day. A few minutes in the morning or late afternoon will do wonders for your harvest! Remember to water before 10:00 am or after 3:00 pm in order to not damage your plants.
Also, the garden needs everyone’s help in order to be successful. Please take a moment to weed an area outside of your plot, water a perimeter plant or sweep the front walkways at the gardens. The gardens look great but can look so much better if everyone pitches in!
PRODUCE CART – BACK IN BUSINESS!
The MOSAIC Produce Cart will hit the street on Saturday, August 16, 2014 from 9:00 am – 12:00 PM. The cart will sell fresh produce from our gardens, donated vegetables from members of the Pottstown Garden Club and local farmers! There will also be a resource table with loads of Free information to learn more about gardening, health and nutrition!
Produce sales will happen each Saturday from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm beginning August 16th and continue each week until we run out of vegetables to sell!J
Spread the word, let all of your neighbors know!
MOVIE NIGHT – ANOTHER GREAT HIT!
Thank you to each of you who joined us to watch the Disney movie “Frozen” last Saturday. There were bunches of families and loads of kids who showed up to take part in the event! The balloon artist was there and make dozens of great balloon animals for the kids. Parents and kids alike shared in the experience and had a great time. Look forward to another great movie presentation next year!

Howdy Gardeners and Faithful Supporters,
The community gardens are taking root in a huge way in the downtown Pottstown area!
We have tons of regularly scheduled garden days, summer camps, workshops and other events happening at both gardens in the upcoming months. We will soon have regular office hours planned and posted so anyone who wants to know more about MOSAIC, organic gardening or food nutrition advocacy programs can stop in to learn more! Our produce cart will be back in rotation again this year each Saturday and/or Sunday and other random days throughout the growing season.
That said, we have outgrown the ability to notify everyone via email of each event as they develop. The good news is…if you “Like” us of Facebook or visit our site mosaicclt.org you will still be kept up to date with the latest MOSAIC information!
Reminders, such as “Don’t forget to water your plot” and other quick notes will be sent using Facebook as well.
Don’t have a Facebook account??? GET ONE! I say that with all the love of a big, juicy red tomato!
Thanks so much for GROWING with us! We really appreciate it!
See Ya’ at the Gardens,

Happy Hump Day!
XL Insurance, a corporation committed to helping others, came to the gardens and kicked butt (in an eco-friendly kind of way)! J A total of 8 volunteers visited our first garden in order to spread wood chips on the walking paths, edge out and till every garden plot and move piles of wood from the front of the gardens to the back. They also weeding the perimeter beds at the garden quite nicely. The garden couldn’t look any better! Then, the XL Superheroes moved on to our second garden where we moved dirt like never before in order to create 15 garden beds! The XL team rocked! We could not have moved so much dirt without their help! (Pictures of the day’s events are attached)
Thanks again XL Insurance and our garden member, Laura Wagner, for providing a helping hand!
The Hill School…MOSAIC cannot thank you enough for your continued support of our community gardens! The amount of volunteer efforts provided to MOSAIC has been priceless…we hope you all have a great summer and we look forward to working with you in your final volunteer days at the gardens this season! (Pictures of the events are attached)

A second set of Troop 01104 girls were back at the gardens this Saturday to work on their very own plot. They got a chance to learn more about planting, growing and composting at the gardens. Thanks to our gardener, Chris Hoffman, for helping spread the word about the community gardens!
A holistic health workshop was facilitated by MOSAIC at the Heart of God Ministries on Sunday! They are excited about the gardens and will be joining us this growing season! Join me in welcoming the Heart of God and their entire congregation (insert hand claps here)!
The fun doesn’t stop there…volunteers and other workers will be at the second garden as there is still so much to be done prior to our first planting day, THIS SATURDAY, May 17 beginning at 12 noon. We have mulch being delivered shortly along with the perimeter bed plants. These items need to be planted and spread swiftly!

I hope that each of you have had a productive enjoyable day today. The community gardens sure did! The gardens had more than 30 visitors and volunteers today – the largest visiting day so far this year!
Troop 01104 Girl Scouts of the Boyertown Service Unit visited the garden and helped to relocate mosquito-repellent plants from their plastic pots to one of our unassigned garden beds until after the last frost. The plants will be planted in the perimeter garden beds on the first official Garden Work & Play Day. We are hopeful that the mosquito-repelling geraniums will keep those pesky insects at bay. The geraniums smell like citronella candles…take a whiff the next time you stop by the garden! J
Troop 01104 will be back at the gardens this Saturday to work on their very own plot. They will learn more about planting, growing and composting at the gardens.
About 20 young women, members of the YWCA, stopped by the gardens loaded with a super-healthy lunch prepared back at the YW. The girls and their group leaders toted gourmet sandwiches, fruit salads, brownies and plenty other goodies made with the freshest ingredients! We shared information about the community gardens, why they were developed and how to become a member. The lunch date couldn’t have been any better! It takes mega talent to make brownies with black beans, spinach and coffee…the girls got it! Thank you, girls, for sharing your amazing meal!
On the following days, we will be working in the gardens to prepare both locations for the soon-approaching planting day, Saturday May 17! Mark your calendars! Our first priority is to lay 30 cubic yards of top soil in order to create the new garden beds at our 615 Chestnut Street location. Then, we will move forward with mulching and perimeter planting. Please reply to this email if you can be there to help!
