Gardens Manager/Community Engagement Specialist: Part time, in-person (Options for Seasonal or Year-Round)
Preservation Pottstown Inc., which does business as Mosaic Community Land Trust (Mosaic CLT) is a non-profit organization dedicated to area revitalization and homeownership. Mosaic helps make Pottstown stronger by stabilizing neighborhoods and creating a vital community; providing permanently affordable housing, operating community gardens, and fortifying the artistic spirit through our Pottstown Community Arts group. We empower Pottstown residents to make positive changes by offering well-rounded programs on gardening, nutrition and health, home maintenance, money management, and arts and culture.
Salary: $16,000 – 18,000 Part-Time based on experience (Seasonal and/or Year-Round Options)
Scope of the Position:
Operate four community gardens, including: the Mosaic Community Garden at 423 Chestnut Street, the Chestnut Street Garden at 615 Chestnut Street, the Walnut Street Garden (also known as the Permaculture Garden) at 301 E Walnut Street, the Barth Garden at Barth Elementary School, 467 W Walnut Street. Recruit gardeners and lease out garden beds for the growing season, keep track of gardeners, collect plot fees with a goal of 100% utilization of beds; Coordinate with the Executive Director on which CLT members want plots.
The Gardens Manager will organize committees within each garden made up of plot holders, community members, and board members, hold regular committee meetings with the goal of community care and control within each garden; Keep the board liaison for gardens informed of what is happening in the gardens.
The manager must keep common areas, including in front of the gardens, clean and litter and weed-free; Ensure that plot holders keep plots clean, tidy and generally weed free at each garden; assist as needed. Keep garden sheds well stocked with tools and gloves in good condition; Spend time each day working in each garden, know the plot holders and garden committees by name, and be keenly aware of the needs in each garden.
Work with the Executive Director and Programming Intern to develop gardening curriculum for year-round programming. Keep channels of communication with the Executive Director open. Regularly check and respond to organizational and member emails. This job is task-driven. Recognize that some events and meetings will take place outside of normal working hours in order to drive inclusivity within a diverse and hard working community.
To perform successfully an individual should demonstrate the following professional and personal skills, qualities, and characteristics:
Self-starter who can manage multiple tasks at once, eagerness to be part of a team, but able to work on their own, comfortable communicating with a wide range of diverse community members, strong interpersonal and organizational skills. Gardening knowledge is a plus – or at least a strong familiarity with the basics. Comfort with using social media to communicate across the community, promote events and workdays, and build awareness of the community gardens, Mosaic’s mission, and the land trust model.
